Friar’s Club Roast’s Flavor Flav, Shut Off Your TV!

Flav

With the exception of the September 11th attack I have never viewed a spectacle that so disheartened me to the prospect of our species moving forward on the evolutionary timeline. What happened to the engineers, and the arithmeticians, and the writers, and the historians who intellectualized in entertainment. Courts were held with Mozart cavorting as he played the piano or half drunk conducted musicians- today we have a pseudo culture of mindless tragedy being pushed by an almost drug dealer mentality. Corporate TV is wack yall!!!!! And the world eats it up!!!

Flavor Flav was roasted by a host of entertainment spleandor: Snoop Dog, Ice T, Carrot Top Jimmy Kimmel, Briget Nielsen, Lisa Lampanelli, Greg Giraldo (who is he?), Patton Oswalt, Jeffrey Ross, Sommore, and finally Kat Williams as the Master of Ceremonies- readers, it was a mess. I couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of peoples mouths, there’s really not much more to say about it. This is what MTV has come to- not that it was ever very much to begin with. Thank the gods that stations like MTV and Comedy Central are raising the losers that are going to take over the work force and future hospital, and legal, and civic, and educational positions in the grand en masse Walmart, Big Pharma, oil guzzeling consuming organism we have coming.

Readers: If this is a sign of things to come, what will happen to this planet? If Big TV can set the standard that Flavor Flav is what our nations brightest are best served by watching during primetime TV hours is here today what will be here tomorrow? Americans each have the responsibility of saying no to this pandemic. I wonder what would happen if each and every head connected to the tube just shut the TV off. Roger Waters wrote about it in Amused to Death and folks, in the words of the great Roger Waters “this species has amused itself to death.” It’s very possible he’s right, in some way there is a fire in us all I think that is dead already. Perhaps it is in some small way tied to Flavor Flav in that his show and other examples of its detritus is what Americans are distracted by on the television, in magazines, on the radio, in the media while fights are picked by political forces for concepts like energy control, and globalization, and leader of the pack.

I read an interesting quote today: “In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” — Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I wonder what FDR would have thought of the Flavor Flav roast, and more-so what would he think about TV?

  1. Hi Ian,

I like what you are posting, from someone who finds in your poetry what is good about life, I want to see poetry mixed in here. I know it is your blog, I am just expressing myself. I am a compulsive expressive.

I live rurally and cable is a luxury. I have not had television for almost 4 years. I wondered at first: How will this feel?

    I never missed it.

I do like some television shows so now I watch them through Netflix. Because of Netflix I am learning about artists I never would have discovered on my own, history, events, I watch television series and movies.

There is one lone person out here who is not televisioning!

    Thanks Ian,

    Kim

  2. PS
